May 6-10
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Outsiders: This week, students read and discussed Chapters 7 and 8. In Chapter 7, we discussed how all of the characters were coping after Bob’s murder, Johnny and Dally’s injuries, and the upcoming rumble between the Greasers and the Socs. With respect to Chapter 8, we learned more about Johnny’s injuries and his fear of dying young. In addition to reading, we also created a transcript of an interview between a reporter and a witness from the scene of the church fire. As part of their transcript, students pretended to be a reporter asking five open ended questions. Then as a response, students answered each question while pretending to be one of the characters. Next week, we will read and discuss Chapters 9-12 and will begin work on either a newspaper article or an obituary.
Fahrenheit 451: This week students finished reading and discussing Part II, The Sieve and the Sand. After completion of their discussions, students began their Write Up of Part II. For their Write up, students were responsible for summarizing the section, analyzing the title, The Sieve and the Sand, and evaluating their thoughts of the events. In addition to finishing Part II, we also began work on Part III, Burning Bright. We started by predicting the meaning of the title, we analyzed a poem by William Blake titled, “The Tyger”, and finally we began our literature discussion groups. Next week we will finish reading and discussing Part III and will begin our final Write up.
Writing: See Each Novel Above
Maps: This week students took their Spring Maps assessment. As soon as all students are finished testing, I will give them a print out of their final results.
Grammar: This week we began learning about interjections, words that show strong feeling or emotion. Next week we will begin practicing for the final exam by writing sentences using particular words as particular parts of speech.
