December 10-20
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Reading: This week we read and discussed Stave 4 titled “The Last of the Three Ghosts”. In the stave, we visited seven different scenes so that Scrooge could learn the consequences of his future. We also read and discussed Stave 5 titled “The End of It” to find out how Scrooge was able to redeem himself with Fred, Bob, and the charity collectors. In addition to reading, we also finished our focus on vocabulary words and symbolism. Finally, we ended the week by viewing Staves 4 and 5 of the George C. Scott movie adaptation.
Writing: Next week students will write a five paragraph essay about the transformation of Scrooge after his visits from the three ghosts. Students will receive an outline of the essay setup as part of google classroom. They will also receive a rubric. The following format was taught:
Intro – Hook – open with an interesting beginning
Background – state title- A Christmas Carol, author - Charles Dickens, main character - Ebenezer Scrooge, banker, mean, etc., setting – London, England
State claim – Scrooge changed after visits from three ghosts
State subtopics – He changed towards Fred, Bob, and charity collectors
Body 1 (Fred) - Topic Sentence, RACE (mean example), RACE (nice example) – students get ideas and quotes from Stave 1 and Stave 5. Explanations come from Staves 2, 3, and 4
Body 2 (Bob) – Topic Sentence, RACE (mean example), RACE (nice example) – students get ideas and quotes from Stave 1 and Stave 5. Explanations come from Staves 2, 3, and 4
Body 3 – (charity collectors) - Topic Sentence, RACE (mean example), RACE (nice example) – students get ideas and quotes from Stave 1 and Stave 5. Explanations come from Staves 2, 3, and 4
Conclusion – restate claim, restate subtopics, state theme of story, relate theme to Scrooge
Essays will be due on Thursday, December 20th. All essays should be printed and double spaced.
Grammar: This week we continued to practice adjectives, words that describe nouns. Next week we will take a short break from grammar so that we can finish writing our essays before Winter Break.
Book Review: This week students read Goal 6. This quarter, instead of goal notes, I am having students read on their own and then write an in class summary of their reading. Next week the Goal 7 summary will be written on Wednesday. All books must be read in entirety by Thursday, January 3rd as they will then be required to fill out their book review answers.
MAPS: Students took their Winter MAPS assessment on Monday, December 10th. As soon as all results are posted, I will share them with students. Most likely this event will occur after Winter Break
Winter Break: Have a wonderful vacation with friends and family!
