February 25-March 1
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Reading: This week we read and discussed Sections 7, 8, and 9 of Night. In Section 7, we read about the 10 day journey from Gleiwitz to Buchenwald in the cattle cars without food and water. We also read and answered questions about emaciation and the significance of bread during the Holocaust. For Section 8, we read about the death of Elie’s father and Elie’s sense of guilt and relief of his passing. We also read and discussed a poem by Emily Dickinson called “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”. Finally, for Section 9, we read about Elie’s liberation and his inability to recognize himself at the end of the Holocaust. We finished the unit by reading and discussing both a poem titled, “We Will Never Forget – Auschwitz” and a Q and A with a German Commandant. Next week, students will take a comprehension test based on the novel, Night. We will also read an article about the Titanic in preparation for an argumentative essay on who caused the Titanic to sink.
Writing: This week students answered a journal prompt based on Section 6 of Night. In Section 6, students read about the death march during the dead of winter from Auschwitz to Gleiwitz. As part of our reading, we talked about the special bond between Elie and his dad and how they depended on each other to survive. For this prompt, I asked students to think of a time that they had to make a sacrifice for another. Finally, I asked students to write a journal prompt based on Section 8 of Night. In Section 8, Elie lost his father. For this prompt, I asked students to write about the difference between responsibility and freedom. Next week we will begin preparation for our argumentative essay on the Titanic.
Grammar: This week we continued to practice concepts already taught.
Book Review: All novels must be completed by Wednesday, March 6th as students will be taking a comprehension test based on the plot of their novel.
Midterm Exam: As soon as all the exams are finished, I will pass them back and go over the results with students. I have four students left to finish.
