September 24-28
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Reading: This week, using the Greek myth, The Kidnapping, students identified examples of both internal and external conflict. In addition to identifying the type of conflict, students also had to determine more specifically what kind of conflict such as character vs. nature, character vs. character and/or character vs. conscience. In addition to conflict, we also discussed cause/effect relationships while reading the myth, Prometheus. Finally, on Wednesday, students had a mini assessment on the myth, Pandora’s Box, and were asked to identify character attributes, setting, conflict, and cause/effect relationships. Next week we will focus on identifying the climactic moment and students will begin to write a comparison essay of the two different versions of the myth, Phaethon.
7+: In addition to the work above, students also read and discussed chapter 4, “Cyclops’ Cave” and chapter 5, “Keeper of the Winds”. Next week, students will begin a comparison essay of the chapter “Circe” as it relates to its television adaptation.
Writing: see reading and book review
Grammar: This week, we learned about coordinating conjunctions such as: and, or, nor, for, so, yet, and but. Coordinating conjunctions are words that join together words, phrases, or clauses. Next week we will practice concepts already taught.
Book Review: Students chose a fiction reading book at their reading/interest level of about 200 pages. Students now have eight weeks to read and annotate their book. Using the Cornell note-taking method, students will be bullet pointing important information, reacting to the text through the use of questions, comments, or connections, and then writing a short 8-10 sentence summary. Goal 5 reading and notes are due on Wednesday, October 3rd. All books and notes must be finished by Wednesday, October 24th.
Conferences: Scheduled conferences will be on Thursday, October 11th. An email should have been sent from the office, so that you can schedule a 10 minute slot with the team. Open conferences will be on Wednesday, October 10th from 3:30–7:00 pm in the school gym.
