November 26-30
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Reading: This week we read and discussed Stave 2 titled “The First of the Three Ghosts”. In the stave, we went back in time with the Ghost of Christmas Past to view five painful scenes from Scrooge’s past. Like stave 1, we also focused on vocabulary words and symbolism. Finally, we ended the week by watching the George C. Scott movie adaptation to further assist with comprehension. Next week, we will be reading Stave 3 to learn more about Fred Holloway, Bob Cratchit, and the poor while traveling with the Ghost of Christmas Present.
Writing: This week, students wrote a journal entry from the perspective of Scrooge. As part of the prompt, students had to describe three scenes and discuss the impact of their memory on Scrooge. With each scene, students were to mention his regret and the lesson he learned.
Grammar: This week we began learning about subordinating conjunctions; conjunctions that join together two clauses to form complex sentences. Words such as while, since, after, because, if, etc. are subordinating conjunctions.
Book Review: This week students read Goal 4. This quarter, instead of goal notes, I will have students read on their own and then write an in class summary of their reading. Next week the Goal 5 summary will be written on Wednesday.
