May 13-17
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Outsiders: This week, students read and discussed Chapters 9-12. In Chapter 9, we discussed how all of the characters fared during the rumble between the greasers and the socs. In Chapter 10, we learned about Dally’s premeditated death by the police. In Chapter 11, we discussed a conversation between Ponyboy and Randy, a soc. And finally in Chapter 12, we read and discussed how each of the characters’ heals after the deaths of Johnny and Dally. In addition to finishing the novel, we also began work on a business letter. Students are responsible for writing a letter to a judge in which they argue whether or not Ponyboy should stay in the custody of his older brother, Darry. All typed business letters will be due on Wednesday, May 22nd.
Fahrenheit 451: This week students finished reading and discussing Part III, Burning Bright. After completion of their discussions, students began a Write up of Part III. For their Write up, students are responsible for summarizing the section, analyzing the title, Burning Bright, and evaluating their thoughts of the events. In addition to finishing Part III, we also discussed the importance of The Book of Ecclesiastes, analyzed the symbolism of Montag representing that book, and created a character collage based on one of the main characters. Next week, we will have a test on theme, will take part in a banned book café, and will begin work on a flip grid, an assignment based on a book of student choice.
Writing: See Each Novel Above
Maps: As soon as all students are finished testing, I will give them a print out of their final results.
Grammar: This week we began practicing for the final exam by writing sentences using particular words as particular parts of speech.
ELA Final Exam: The ELA exam will be Friday, May 31st. It will consist of students writing their own grammar sentences and answering multiple choice reading comprehension questions.
