April 8-12
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Outsiders: This week, we read and discussed Chapters 2 and 3. In Chapter 2, we found out more about Johnny being jumped by the Socs and in Chapter 3, we learned more about the background and dreams of each of the characters. In addition to reading, we also read and discussed the poem, “Richard Cory”, and the poem, “We Wear the Mask”. Finally, we ended the week by analyzing the lyrics of songs by Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, The Beatles, and The Who and by reading and analyzing the poem, “The Road Not Taken”. Next week, we will read and discuss Chapter 4 and we will begin work on a Wanted Poster.
Fahrenheit 451: This week, students participated in a jigsaw activity to answer pre-reading questions. Students also met in literature groups to discuss Part 1: The Hearth and the Salamander. As part of their discussion groups, each student had an individual role. One student served as the discussion director asking open ended questions, a second student served as the passage analyst highlighting interesting scenes, a third student served as the connector to make text to self, text to text and text to world connections, and finally a fourth student served as the vocabulary enricher to find and define difficult words and to summarize the night’s reading. A couple of groups, with five members, even had an illustrator, a student that illustrated a meaningful scene. Next week we will focus on meaningful quotes from Part 1, will debate some controversial questions, and will write up an analysis of part one.
Writing: This week students turned in a recommendation letter that they wrote for Ms. Young, their student teacher in World History.
Grammar: This week we practiced concepts previously taught.
