April 29 – May 3
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Outsiders: This week, students read and discussed Chapters 5 and 6. In Chapter 5, we discussed how Ponyboy and Johnny were adapting to life in the abandoned church, and we analyzed the poem by Robert Frost, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. With respect to Chapter 6, we discussed Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally rescuing children from the burning church, and we analyzed the characteristics of a hero and whether or not the character, Dally, was a hero. We also completed work on our Wanted Posters and gave each other feedback as to our overall pros and cons. Next week, we will read and discuss Chapters 7 and 8 and will begin work on partner interviews and newspaper articles/obituaries.
Fahrenheit 451: This week, students participated in literature discussion circles to discuss Part II, The Sieve and the Sand. Prior to reading, students made predictions as to how the sieve and the sand were symbolic to the story. Students also finished their Adobe Spark presentations based on an influential quote from Part 1 and participated in a gallery walk to showcase their work. In addition to our gallery walk, students also analyzed the poem, “Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold and discussed how a short video clip from the movie, “The Stepford Wives” connected to our reading. Next week, students will complete a write up of Part II (Summarize section, Analyze title, The Sieve and the Sand, and Evaluate thoughts/opinions) and will begin work on Part III, Burning Bright.
Writing: See Each Novel Above
Maps: Next week on Monday and Tuesday, students will take their Spring Maps assessment. As soon as all students are finished with testing, I will give them a print out of their final results.
Grammar: Next week we will begin learning about interjections, words that show strong feeling or emotion.
