April 15-19
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here’s what we accomplished this week in language arts-
Outsiders: This week, we participated in a couple of mini lessons with Mrs. Mitchell’s class to learn more about how to correctly write a paper in MLA. (See MLA below). We also read and discussed Chapter 4 and we began work on a Wanted Poster. Students are creating a Wanted Poster for either Johnny Cade or Ponyboy Curtis, suspects in a murder. We will continue to work on the Wanted Posters when we return after Spring Break.
Fahrenheit 451: This week, students participated/watched a fishbowl activity. For this activity, one of our literature groups participated in a discussion while the rest of the class focused on elements of the discussion as part of a Bingo game. Students also created an Adobe Spark based on an influential quote from Part 1. For this assignment, students explained their selected quote’s scene, analyzed their quote’s relevance to Part 1, and connected their quote to some of the major themes of the story. In addition, students were responsible for writing a mini assessment for Part 1. As part of the assessment, students had to summarize Part 1, analyze the title, “The Hearth and the Salamander” and evaluate their opinion of Part 1. Finally, we ended the week by having a four corner debate about some of the controversial topics raised from Part 1. After Spring Break, we will begin reading, “The Sieve and the Sand” and continue with our literature groups and roles.
MLA: This week, Mrs. Mitchell and I taught a couple of mini lessons to prepare students for 8th grade next year. We talked about how to create a works cited page, how to type a paper in MLA format, and how to introduce a citation.
Writing: None
Grammar: Students received an extra credit grammar activity. To complete the activity, students need to answer each question according to the proper part of speech and then need to color the corresponding part of the bunny based on each answer.
